Typing test
Heh. I lose time because it doesn't queue words up for me so the transition eats 3-4 seconds total, I'd say, which costs me the 9 words away from the 120 wpm I was tested at years ago:

111 words

Speed test

Frankly I hate that test - it does some really stupid things in counting words where you hit a space and can't correct giving you multiple "wrong" words when really you didn't. Had to restart the test multiple times due to that. You're also right about the read ahead, b/c they don't scroll as you go it costs you quite a bit.

My biggest beef through is that it's not using real english text. When you have a passage from literature, even if it's technical literature, it allows you to "buffer" so much more. My brain tends to "complete" as it goes, so it slows me down alot on tests like this.

85-90 wpm, even on a laptop keyboard sucks. I used to be in the 120-130 range on the IBMs.

Professional services management has wasted all my useful skills! Now I can only talk fast! Oh, and hit F7.

I agree; I've never taken a real typing test where you didn't have actual text, and having the actual text that parses into English allows the brain to buffer it. With this one I could never be more than a word ahead, and then losing extra time to the scroll as well.

It's also counting actual words, which means that if the random word generator picks more long words than short words, you're going to get penalized on keystrokes; a proper test is 5 non-space characters per word, period.

So these numbers really don't stack up well relative to actual typing speed on normal tests. They do stack up well enough next to each other; so we can at least use these numbers Amber DRPG style. =)

So we could type for hours, but in the end.... you're victorious. :)

We take our small victories where we can get them.
